Overdue: Authority

A library checkout card escalates from urgent to absurd—each stamp a declaration that some readers refuse to be governed by due dates and fines.

"Overdue: Authority" An open library book reveals its checkout card mounted inside the cover—stamped due dates marching down in escalating urgency: "Due," "Overdue," "Final Notice," until the bold, slightly misaligned final stamp declares "Overdue: Authority." Beneath, a secondary institutional stamp delivers the verdict: "Renewal Denied." The humor lives in the escalation, in bureaucracy pushed to its absurd conclusion, in the idea that some readers simply cannot be controlled.

Part of The Sanctuary Stacks Collection for National Library Week, this vintage engraving-style design celebrates the beautifully unrepentant readers who've never met a due date they could respect. Inked in black and aged bone tones on dark fabric—for those who consider library fines a badge of honor.

"Some debts are paid in cash. Ours are paid in defiance."
